____

On the occasion of Jahmal's second solo exhibition with Almine Rech - this edition was launched during the NY Art Book Fair (September 19-22, 2019). The painting 'Gato salvaje' was shown during the artist's first solo exhibition at Almine Rech Brussels in 2018, titled 'Solid Ghosts', and belongs to a series of works where jungle, savannah and desert mesh together. Planes of contrasting colours constitute a dry, abstract background from which characters, masks, shamans, and animals, like this wildcat, burst forth. In the same way of his Fauvist, Cubist, and Expressionist predecessors, Jahmal takes inspiration from Africa and beyond: tigers and paddy fields glance to Asia while skeletons hint at Mexican culture, resulting in an incantatory and archaic impression. While oscillating between submission and threat, human and animal, Jahmal's 'Gato salvaje' haunts the pictorial plane. Its stance evokes not only physical control but also suggests the capacity to access immaterial forces, be they creative or destructive: constituting perhaps a polymorphic portrait of the artist himself.
