Vintage Monumental Tonaltepec Amphora Style Handled Clay Vessel with Custom Stand
This large amphora style vessel originates from Tonaltepec, Oaxaca, a region known for its distinctive pottery traditions. Originally these two handled jugs were designed for transporting water, secured to the sides of burros for travel between highland settlements and the valley creeks below. The narrow mouth and tapered neck minimized spillage during transit.
The vessel was wood fired. After firing, Tonaltepec potters applied a plant based tannin wash made from cactus and oak dyes, creating a mottled surface pattern unique to this ceramic tradition. Over time, these vegetal dyes age unevenly, producing tonal shifts and layered effects across the surface, creating an abstract expressionist painterly quality to the surface.
This example likely dates to the early to mid 20th century and exhibits expected surface wear consistent with age and use.
