Vintage Large Japanese Modernist Brown Wood Fired Stoneware Vase

$725.00

Vintage Japanese Modernist Wood-Fired Stoneware Vase

Studio pottery, organic textured stoneware, mid-20th century

Description:

A substantial modernist vase exemplifying the raw beauty of Japanese wood-fired ceramics. The handcrafted piece features an etched striation pattern across its cylindrical form, with a textured surface that reveals the natural variations of traditional noborigama or anagama kiln firing. The deep brown color and organic imperfections embody the wabi-sabi aesthetic.

Function & Display:

This piece serves equally well as a functional vase or standalone sculptural object. Its impressive scale (nearly 20 inches tall) makes it suited for dramatic floral arrangements or as a decorative element in modern interiors.

Condition:

The vase remains in good vintage condition, with minor surface scuffs and small chips that are characteristic of wood-fired ceramics. These features are inherent to the firing process rather than damage.

Attribution & Style Notes:

Though unsigned, the vase's design reflects the postwar Japanese studio pottery movement, drawing parallels to works by influential artists like Kazuo Yagi or Shoji Hamada. The etched linear patterns and unglazed stoneware finish suggest it may have originated in a Kyoto or Shiga prefecture workshop during the mid-20th century.

Dimensions:

Height: 19.5 inches

Diameter: 7 inches

Provenance:

Previously part of a private collection specializing in 20th-century Japanese ceramics.

Collector's Note:

This vase represents an intersection of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and modernist design. Its substantial size and distinctive texture make it a noteworthy addition to collections focused on Mingei-inspired studio ceramics or postwar Asian decorative arts.
