Description:
Large hand-built stoneware vase by Japanese-born artist Seiko Kato Behr. The vessel features a narrow circular form with a long slit opening along the top and three circular cutouts integrated into one side. Finished in a matte black wood-fired surface. Designed for ikebana use but equally suited as a sculptural object. Signed by the artist. In good vintage condition with wear consistent with age.

Artist Biography:
Seiko Kato Behr was born in Osaka, Japan, and educated in Tokyo. She studied under Master Potter Teruo Hara and became a private student of Kozo Kato, a Master Shino artist in Tajimi, Japan. Her ceramics merge Japanese traditions with modernist abstraction, exploring the interplay between vessel, space, and environment.

Behr’s work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Smithsonian Institution, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia Flower Show, National Arboretum, and in major exhibitions in Tokyo and Nagoya. She was recognized at the Second Sogetsu International Container Competition in Tokyo (1993) and received the Judges’ Choice Award in 1996. In 2007, she presented a solo exhibition at the Academy Art Museum in Easton, Maryland.
