In 1880, Le Franc Bourgeois widely applied this round anchor emblem to the backs of their factory-prepared canvases and wooden stretcher bars, as a means of authenticating pre-stretched canvases sold through their flagship Paris shops and global retailers. Together with the pattern of craquelure across the surface, the stamp suggests a date in the early twentieth century.
