Stanley Spencer - Two Figures on Grid Paper, Estate Stamped (c. 1939, Pencil on Paper)

$2,500.00

Stanley Spencer - Two Figures on Grid Paper, Estate Stamped (c. 1939, Pencil on Paper).  The drawing is a preliminary sketch for the right section of the Riveters from his Shipbuilding on the Clyde series. Drawing of two figures against Spencer’s typical grid pattern.  This was how Stanley Spencer would lay out images that would later become murals or larger paintings.  Housed in a dark wood frame with a double archival cream colored matte (no glass in the frame).  Original estate stamp is visible en verso.  In good condition with wear consistent with age. Not inspected out of frame.

Size:  19.25 x 34 in

Provenance:  Rago Arts

Spencer worked on the banks of the River Clyde at Lithgows Shipyard in Port Glasgow.

In 1940 he was commissioned by the Ministry of Information to show the intense efforts that went in to the production of merchant shipping vessels, ultimately producing a series of eight paintings entitled Shipbuilding On The Clyde.

The backbreaking and skilled work behind these vast vessels has been recorded for posterity in Spencer's images. The paintings have fans beyond the traditional art community – ex-Manchester United manager, and former shipbuilder, Sir Alex Ferguson is an admirer.

Spencer included a self-portrait in the scene, suggesting he saw himself as part of the process rather than just a detached observer. Spencer was fascinated by the components and machinery of the shipyards as well as the skill of the people who used this equipment. Together they create a vision of well coordinated teamwork.Riveters was the third painting of the series.
