A large vintage wood-fired ceramic ikebana vase by Japanese-American artist Seiko Kato Behr (1941-2010). The vessel features a form with two integrated handle. The wood-firing process has produced surface effects including streaks of pale blue, black, and speckled grey. The artist's signature appears on the underside. The object remains in very good condition, presenting wear consistent with age. Please refer to photos for details.
Artist Biography: Seiko Kato Behr (1941-2010)
Seiko Kato Behr was born in Osaka, Japan, in 1941 and raised and educated in Tokyo. She completed her pottery studies under Japanese Master Potter Teruo Hara and subsequently became a private student of Master Shino Artist Kozo Kato (no relation) in Tajimi, Japan, a historic center of ceramic production.
Behr's work has been featured in major exhibitions in Tokyo and Nagoya, Japan, as well as at the Smithsonian Institution, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Flower Show, and the National Arboretum. In 1993, she received an award at the Second Sogetsu International Container Competition in Tokyo. She shared top honors in the final competition in 1996, taking the Judges' Choice Award. In 2007, she was honored with a solo exhibition of sculptures, installations, and containers at the Academy Art Museum in Easton, Maryland.
The artist was active until her death in 2010 in Chestertown, Maryland, where she had lived and worked.
