This rare handwoven mavuku container originates from the Makhuwa people of northern Mozambique, one of the largest ethnic groups in the region. The vessel is constructed with a fitted lid and a hard midsection that allows it to split in two. The central band is overlaid with strips of bark etched with symbols, likely referencing family identity, cosmological beliefs, or ritual significance.
