Artist Biography: Peter Paone (b. 1936)

Peter Paone is an American painter, printmaker, and educator born in Philadelphia in 1936. He grew up in a first generation Italian-American home and studied at the Philadelphia Museum School of Art (now the University of the Arts), where he received a BFA in art education.

Paone's work is characterized by dreamlike, narrative imagery drawn from literature, mythology, and his imagination. He explains: "I work from memory. I work from what I remember from what I've seen." His practice spans painting, drawing, and printmaking, excelling in etching, aquatint, and lithography.

Paone has held senior teaching positions at Pratt Institute and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he established the printmaking department in 1980 and taught until 2009. He has received two Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grants, a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship (three years in London), a Pennsylvania Council for the Arts Grant, and the 172nd Annual Painting Prize from the National Academy of Design. He was elected an Associate Member of the National Academy of Design in 1981 and a full Academician in 1994.
