Description:
Oil on canvas, 1940 modernist winter city landscape by Danish artist Ole Laurits Olsen Søndergaard, depicting a snow covered view of Roskilde. Signed by the artist. Housed in a gilt wood frame with the original nameplate affixed to the lower center of the frame. Remnants of a tag are present on the verso. The work presents in good condition, with wear consistent with age, including age-related wear to the edges of the frame. Please refer to accompanying photographs for further condition details.
Artist Biography:
Ole Laurits Olsen Søndergaard (1876–1958) was a Danish landscape painter and church decorator. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (1898–1900) and under Kristian Zahrtmann at Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler (1902). He exhibited regularly at Charlottenborg from 1915 and is best known for his winter landscapes of Roskilde and the surrounding fjord, often compared to his contemporary L.A. Ring. Søndergaard also worked extensively on church restorations and decorations, including work at Roskilde and Aarhus Cathedrals, as well as several parish churches. He received the Eckersberg Medal in 1945 and the Thorvaldsen Medal in 1952.
