A Note on the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Print

The print featured in the center compartment is of the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, one of the most widely produced Marian images in the Catholic world. The icon belongs to the Hodegetria family, Greek for "Leader of the Way", and depicts Mary holding the Christ Child, who clings to her in fear after beholding the instruments of his Passion held by the archangels Michael and Gabriel.

The image's history in the West is linked to its arrival in Rome in the late fifteenth century and its later assignment by Pope Pius IX to the Redemptorist order in 1866, with the instruction to "make Our Mother of Perpetual Help known throughout the world." The Redemptorists distributed reproductions widely, and the image became a staple of Catholic devotional life in Europe and beyond. The presence of a Dutch language print in a French tramp art crucifix is consistent with the circulation of such devotional images across national borders.
