Woven cane fiber and natural earth pigments. Monumental antique Baba Tagwa yam helmet mask created by the Abelam people of the East Sepik Province in Papua New Guinea. Constructed from woven cane fiber and decorated with natural earth pigments in black, red, and white. Features a large eye design and a stylized, helmet-like shape designed to be worn. Used in ceremonies for yam harvest festivals and sometimes by men during male initiation cycles. 18.5 x 20 x 16 inches.
