Frederick Childs (American, 1908–1978)
Still Life with Modernist Vase and Flowers, c. 1950
Pastel on paper
23”H × 16”W
Unsigned

This pastel still life, attributed to Frederick Robbins Childs, depicts a restrained tabletop composition featuring a modernist vase filled with flowers and an accompanying yunomi cup.

A Harvard graduate and Manhattan based painter, Frederick Childs began his professional life as a journalist before committing fully to art. His studies with the French Cubist André Lhote in Paris shaped his structural approach to form and composition. While often described as a Post-Impressionist, Childs’ work reveals the disciplined spatial order and abstraction typical of modernist sensibilities.

Childs served with the American Field Service in North Africa and later with the U.S. Infantry in Europe during World War II. After returning to New York, he exhibited extensively at the Passedoit Gallery, aligning with the city’s vibrant postwar art scene.

Unframed. In good vintage condition with minor wear consistent with age.
