Description:
This large tricolor terracotta vessel is a traditional pot stand from the Nupe people of Nigeria. Hand built and fired in an open wood kiln, its coloration is a direct record of its historical use. Sgraffito detailing along the exterior of the vessel. The deep red lower section was protected underground, while the light beige midsection was exposed to the elements. The blackened top ring bears the distinctive patina of exposure to cooking fires.
These stands were essential household items, partially buried to provide a stable base for round-bottomed cooking and storage pots.
