Vintage Brutalist Anagama Fired Spiked Earthenware Vessel by Jeff Shapiro, Signed
Formed with a rugged presence and finished in an anagama wood kiln, the piece displays natural ash deposits and surface variation characteristic of long duration firings. The spiked protrusions reinforce the object’s architectural energy. Minor wear consistent with age and firing.
Size: 6”H × 8”W × 6.75”D
Shapiro (b. 1949, Bronx, NY) spent nearly a decade studying ceramics in Japan (1973–1981), an experience that profoundly shapes his ongoing practice in upstate New York, where he works alongside his wife, ceramic artist Hinako. His work has been widely exhibited across Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America and is represented in numerous public collections.
Public Collections Include:
Huntington Museum of Art (WV); Carlo Zauli Museum (Italy); Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; American Museum of Ceramic Art (CA); Crocker Art Museum (CA); The Mint Museum (NC); Brooklyn Museum (NY); Everson Museum of Art (NY); Fuller Museum (MA); Currier Museum (NH); Boca Raton Contemporary Art Museum (FL); Arkansas Art Center / Decorative Arts Museum (AR); Kajima International (NJ); Mary Burke Collection (NY); Longhouse Foundation (NY); SUNY New Paltz Art Collection (NY).
