Artist Biography:
Horst Janssen (1929–1995) was one of the most acclaimed German draftsmen and printmakers of the 20th century. Born in Hamburg, he studied at the Hochschule für bildende Künste under Alfred Mahlau. Janssen produced a vast body of drawings, etchings, and lithographs characterized by psychological depth, expressive line work, and a sharp sense of irony. His recurring self-portraits and still lifes often blur the line between introspection and performance, revealing both vulnerability and virtuosity.
Janssen’s work is represented in major international museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the British Museum (London), the Albertina (Vienna), the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, and the Horst Janssen Museum in Oldenburg, which holds the most comprehensive archive of his art and writings.
