Artist Biography:
Horst Janssen (1929–1995) was a prolific German draftsman, printmaker, and illustrator, widely regarded as one of the leading graphic artists of the 20th century. Born in Hamburg, he studied at the Hochschule für bildende Künste under Alfred Mahlau. Janssen became known for his technically masterful and psychologically probing drawings, etchings, and lithographs. His art frequently focused on still life, landscapes, and, above all, self-portraiture—works that blur the line between introspection and theatrical self-invention.

Janssen’s work is represented in major international collections, including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the British Museum (London), the Albertina (Vienna), the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, and the Horst Janssen Museum in Oldenburg, Germany, which houses the largest archive of his drawings and prints.
