Artist Biography
Francis E. Jamieson (1895–1950) was a British painter known for his Scottish Highland landscapes and coastal scenes. He became one of the most prolific artists of his time, producing work in both oil and watercolor.
Jamieson is notable for the extensive use of pseudonyms—reportedly close to twenty—including W. Richards, Graham Williams, Henry Stewart, J. McGregor, Aubrey Ramus, and Montgomery Ansell. This practice allowed him to circumvent his contractual obligations and sell additional work through other channels. His Highland landscapes typically feature dramatic skies and luminous light over water, rendered in a traditional Victorian style. His work was widely reproduced as postcards by G. Ajelli & Co. of London during the 1920s.
Note on Attribution: Research conducted by Dr. Mike Trew indicates that no birth, marriage, or death records exist for a "Francis E. Jamieson" in British records. The name is now understood to be a commercial pseudonym used by Barnett Aubrey Ramus (1881–1956), a London-based artist, and possibly his brother Isaac Fernleigh Ramus. The works signed "F.E. Jamieson" remain highly collected.
