Antique Trio of White Clay Chinese Tomb Figurines (Mingqi)
This trio of white clay tomb figurines belongs to the long tradition of mingqi, “spirit goods” or “bright objects”, placed in Chinese burials to accompany the deceased in the afterlife. Made to serve as attendants, guardians, or symbolic companions, mingqi were produced across many dynasties, with examples emerging during the Han and later periods. They had more of a utilitarian use as guides, rather than a sign of luxury.
Each figure is modeled in unglazed clay with traces of their original finish. One figure appears to hold a small bird, while another may hold a star like object, gestures that may have symbolized guidance, protection, or offerings. These small gestures often referenced everyday activities or motifs within Chinese cosmology.
In used condition with wear consistent with age and burial history. Please refer to photos for detailed condition.
