Large Chip-Carved Footed Tramp Art Box with Three Concealed Drawers
Dimensions: 17.5 in. (W) x 8.75 in. (H) x 8.75 in. (D)
A rare and finely executed example of late 19th- to early 20th-century American Tramp Art, this large horizontal box features three discreetly integrated drawers, seamlessly incorporated into the overall geometric form. Constructed primarily from repurposed cigar boxes—some original labels remain visible on the box’s sides—this work exemplifies the resourcefulness and decorative ingenuity characteristic of the Tramp Art tradition.
The surface is adorned with a precise six-tiered chip-carved pyramid motif on all sides, showcasing a high degree of craftsmanship and uniformity. The feet are inverted pyramid shape. Notably, the design reflects a measured aesthetic restraint, offering a cleaner and more minimal interpretation than is typical for Tramp Art, which often favors layered ornamentation.
The box remains in very good condition, exhibiting wear consistent with age and use. Side note: the last two photos were taken in a bright sunlight room to show the tone of the wood with direct sunlight.
