Pre-Columbian Costa Rican Carved Volcanic Stone Fertility Figure
Costa Rican Stone Figure
Volcanic Stone
Height: 5.75'' x 3.25'' x 1.5'' (15 x 8 x 4 cm)
Period: Circa 300 BCE - 1550 CE
Culture: Diquís (Greater Chiriquí region, Costa Rica)
Provenance: From the collection of Dr. Albert and Carol Rosenthal; Estate of Carol Rosenthal.
This stone figure is a characteristic example of Pre-Columbian sculpture from Costa Rica's Diquís culture. Carved from volcanic stone, it depicts a stylized male figure in a formal, frontal stance with arms akimbo. The explicit depiction of a phallus identifies it as a fertility object, likely used in rituals related to ancestor veneration, potency, or agricultural cycles.
The material and compact, columnar form are consistent with known Diquís artifacts from the Late Formative through Contact periods.
The object's surface shows a weathered patina consistent with age. Can be used without a stand, but is not completely stable.
