Ben Solowey was born in Warsaw, Poland. In 1907, the family moved to St. Petersburg, Russia.. By 1914, the family immigrated to Philadelphia, where Solowey, then fourteen, began his formal art training at the Graphic Sketch Club and the Spring Garden Institute.

In 1919, Solowey was awarded a scholarship to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he studied under Hugh H. Breckenridge and Daniel Garber.

Solowey moved to New York in 1928, where he was commissioned by The New York Times and the Herald Tribune to produce charcoal portraits of Broadway and Hollywood celebrities.
