Antique Neolithic Style Chinese Majiayao Polychrome Terracotta Vessel

This hand painted terracotta vessel, in the style of Neolithic Majiayao pottery (circa 3300–2000 BCE), features an elongated barrel shaped form with a small flared mouth and a single stirrup near the rim. The exterior is decorated with geometric polychrome patterns, typical of the Majiayao culture’s sophisticated use of mineral based pigments.

Majiayao ceramics, produced in the upper Yellow River region of what is now Gansu and Qinghai provinces, are among the most celebrated examples of early Chinese painted pottery. These vessels were often used for storing or transporting liquids such as water or fermented beverages. The narrow opening and elongated body of this example would have minimized spillage during travels.

Wear, surface abrasions, and small chips are present, consistent with age and handling. Please refer to photos for detailed condition.

Dimensions: 15.25” W × 11” H × 7.75” D
