Antique Hand-Carved Tramp Art Heart and Winged Motif Wall Pocket
Attributed to John Frank Zadzora, 1934
Dimensions: 31” H x 16.5” W x 4.75” D
This remarkable hand-carved tramp art wall pocket is attributed to John Frank Zadzora, a Pennsylvania-based folk artist known for his distinctive heart and wing motifs. The piece features a large central heart with an inset patinated mirror, surrounded by four smaller mirrored hearts—one in each corner. The work is carved from a light brown-toned wood, showcasing the layered, notched construction characteristic of tramp art.
Two drawers are integrated at the base, each with smaller mirrored hearts on their fronts. Just below the drawers, the date "1934" is carved. At the top, four wing-like elements extend outward, framing a carved horseshoe at the center—a traditional symbol of luck.
Zadzora’s signature style and Pennsylvania origins strongly support the attribution. A nearly identical piece is held in the collection of the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe:
