A Note on Ravensworth Castle and the Gothic Revival Interior
Ravensworth Castle in County Durham was redesigned by the architect John Nash beginning in 1808 on the instruction of Sir Thomas Liddell, first Baron Ravensworth. Nash's design created a Gothic inspired castle, and construction continued for many years, remaining unfinished at the time of Nash's death in 1835. The house was completed in 1846, though the design had been altered from Nash's original plans. The castle served as a girls' boarding school beginning in the 1920s becoming abandoned shortly after. The majority of the house was demolished in 1953, and the remaining towers were abandoned by the Liddell family in 1976.
