Saint Catherine of Siena:
Saint Catherine of Siena (1347–1380) was an Italian mystic, Dominican tertiary, and Doctor of the Church, known for her profound spiritual writings, political influence, and devotion to church reform. Born in Siena as the youngest of a large family, she consecrated her virginity to Christ at age seven and entered the Dominican Third Order at sixteen. She is renowned for persuading Pope Gregory XI to return the papacy from Avignon to Rome in 1376 and for her extensive letter-writing on behalf of Church unity. Her major work, The Dialogue, is a classic of Italian mystical literature. She received the stigmata in 1375 and died in Rome at age 33. Canonized in 1461, she was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1970 and a patron saint of Europe in 1999.
