Antique 17th Century Chinese Martaban Black Glazed Ceramic Vessel
Size: 14.75”H x 12”D
This 17th century Chinese Martaban vessel features a black glaze over a rounded ceramic form with applied lug handles. The glaze, originally used both for decorative and utilitarian purposes, has partially worn away on the lower half of the body, revealing the clay substrate beneath. Such vessels were traditionally produced in southern China and widely traded across Southeast Asia, particularly through ports in present day Myanmar, Thailand, and Indonesia. Known collectively as “Martaban jars,” they served as storage containers for water, oil, and trade goods.
In good antique condition with visible wear consistent with age and use. Please refer to images for detailed condition. Last two photos are taken in daylight.
