Arthur W. Lyall (1913–1991) was a regional artist and leather carver whose practice was based in the Adirondack region of New York State. Born on October 16, 1912, he settled in Schroon Lake in the 1950s and remained there until his death on September 12, 1991. In addition to his artistic work, Lyall owned and operated the Powder Horn Bar in Schroon Lake.
Lyall worked across an unusually wide range of supports and materials. Beyond conventional canvas, he painted on glass bottles, tree fungus, clocks, and custom storefront holiday signs, and obviously trays.
His landscape subjects were drawn from the terrain around him: the mountains, lakes, and forests of the Adirondacks.
Museum Holdings:
Examples of Lyall's work are held in the permanent collections of the Adirondack Experience Museum in Blue Mountain Lake, New York, and the Schroon Lake North Historical Society. Additional works remain in private collections.
