João Vitalino, Signed (c. 1970)
Terracotta, hand-built
Dimensions: 4.75” H × 3.5” W × 3” D

This terracotta sculpture depicts a dentist working on a seated patient. The work is signed and stamped on the underside by João Vitalino, son of the folk artist Mestre Vitalino (1909–1963), whose workshop in Caruaru, Pernambuco, became the epicenter of modern Brazilian popular ceramics.

João Vitalino continued to create figural clay works (after the death of his father) rooted in Northeastern Brazil’s rural traditions while also adapting them to new markets, including collectors of folk and outsider art. This piece is typical subject matter for which the Vitalino family is celebrated, capturing everyday life with both humor and documentary style realism.
