Description:
This large seed pot style vessel by contemporary American ceramicist Jeffrey Zigulis was executed in 1983 using the anagama firing technique. The vessel's surface exhibits pink and magenta hues that transition into greys and black along the lower register. The mineral rich soil sourced by Zigulis from Prunedale, California, a clay deposit now inaccessible due to subsequent development, contributes to the distinctive ombré effects found in his works from this era. The soft color gradations are reminiscent of the "soak-stain" aesthetic of Helen Frankenthaler's color field paintings. The vessel is signed and dated 1983 on the underside. Condition is good, with minimal wear consistent with age and firing method.
