Artist Biography

Seiko Kato Behr (1941–2010) was a Japanese-born American potter, sculptor, and installation artist based in Chestertown, Maryland. Born in Osaka, she was raised and educated in Tokyo before completing her pottery studies under Master Potter Teruo Hara and becoming a private student of Master Shino artist Kozo Kato in Tajimi, Japan.

For over thirty years, Behr focused on creating container forms for ikebana arrangements that also functioned as independent sculptural works. She was a second-degree master of the Ohara-ryū school of ikebana, and her ceramics merge Japanese ceramic traditions with modernist abstraction.

In 2007, she presented a solo exhibition of sculptures, installations, and containers at the Academy Art Museum in Easton, Maryland.
